With the intention of going inside, to the underworld of the desert, this piece was created to represent the the connection between oneself and nature. Appropriately named Joshua Foehn, both for it’s placement on the leeward side of the property and the gusty, desert winds that blew during it’s creation; this piece represents the lungs, specifically the alveoli or tiny air sacs that inflate and deflate in coil shapes with each breath. The breath is considered the marriage between the heart and the lungs, giving life to the body. As we breath in oxygen and exhale carbon monoxide, all trees perform the opposite. There is a symbiotic relationship between the two - oneself and nature. One could say that they could not exist without each other.
So much of the life in the desert is unseen, underground, protected, similar to the inner world. Feldspar, Monzonite, Quartz diorite and other desert stones sit firmly upon the shifting sands, representing the structure and foundation of the lungs. The colors of red, pink, orange and yellow compile most of the piece, illuminated by the intense desert sun. The top of the piece faces north; at the bottom of the coil, a stone naturally split in two faces directly east and west, catching the rising and setting sunlight. The coil is filled with rose quartz, radiating self love, understanding and connection. Each arm inside the coil is lined with a rich blue-colored stone.
Joshua Foehn is designed to connect you to that underworld, the inner consciousness that is often hidden even from oneself. Breathe to your intuition, to your inner connection and unconditional love. For the woes of the world can only be addressed when one can learn to navigate the inner world.

As in creation, meaningful coincidence arises. The name of our project, Mistoyo, means “beneath the rainbow” in the Chumash language. Chosen for its synchronicity as the beginning of our journey into earthworks began in Ojai, “valley of the moon”, where the Chumash thrived for hundreds of years. True to form, a rainbow appeared in the desert, just above the piece we had created the day before. Joshua Foehn was cleansed by intense rain and graced by a bright prism of energy reflecting all colors of the chakra system.
